INDUSTRY. NexKemia continues to grow with a $ 20M investment in its Potton Township plant.
The expansion of the production building located on Bellevue Street is already underway. A first phase will be ready for next spring, while the entire expansion will be fully delivered by mid-2023.
Ultimately, the company will increase its production of expandable polystyrene (styrofoam) by 40%, which represents approximately 25,000 additional tonnes. The total plant area will jump by 30%.

The investment will allow the creation of new extrusion lines, according to General Manager Pierre Beaudry. “This new process will be cleaner than current production from chemical reactors,” he says. It will be more environmentally friendly by reducing our consumption of water and chemicals, in addition to using electricity even more for energy. “
These future production lines will also allow the creation of new value-added products, such as styrofoam with increased insulation (in homes), in color and with recycled content.
Mr. Beaudry gets carried away by talking about this latest innovation that is almost unique in North America. “This will be a big step towards a circular economy, because we will incorporate in our new products stretch polystyrene recycled by our partners”, he applauds.

CREATION OF 20 JOBS
The number of employees will also jump from 70 to 90 people. Mr. Beaudry believes he can meet the challenge of recruiting workers, even if many types of businesses have difficulty meeting their needs these days.
In particular, NexKemia worked with the Center for Excellence in Industrial Training (CEFI) at the Sommets School Service Center to train workers ready to join the Potton plant upon completion of their training. “Our salaries also compare to the most interesting salaries in the region’s manufacturing sector,” he specifies.
The most recent sums injected are in addition to the total investments of $ 30 million over the past 13 years at this Potton plant.
NexKemia has been around since 2008 in Potton, but the Huntsman company was manufacturing a similar product in the same location as early as the 1980s.
